Acupuncture is derived from centuries old Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) - fine needles are inserted through the skin, primarily to stimulate sensory nerves for therapeutic effect. Western Medical Acupuncture is an adaptation of TCM and is increasingly used in NHS pain clinics, hospices, GP surgeries and private practice.

Western Medical Acupuncture

NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) is the organisation that produces guidance for all medical practitioners in the UK. By rigorous review of scientific research, NICE produces recommendations for evidence based treatments of all kinds.

BMAS (British Medical Acupuncture Society) promotes the use of acupuncture by statutory regulated healthcare professionals who have undergone rigorous training. BMAS seeks to: promote high standards of working practices in acupuncture; and to stimulate and promote the use and scientific understanding of acupuncture as part of the practice of medicine.
